Sunshine Coast Festival of the Performing Arts 2008
Since it was founded in 1973, the volunteer-run Sunshine Coast Festival of the Performing Arts (SCFPA) has been supporting outstanding performers here on the Coast. The Sunshine Coast Music Festival was established by Aletta Gilker and Mary Brooke to provide the opportunity for musicians to receive expert adjudication here on the Coast and to perform for appreciative audiences in our community.
The Festival has grown from its initial two days of sessions to twelve days, from 30 entries to over 330 entries! Professional adjudicators review Festival performances ranging from solos to school bands and choirs involving as many as 75 musicians. With the generous support of community donors, 80 scholarships, trophies and medals are awarded annually. Over the years, hundreds of outstanding young musicians have performed at the Festival. Many are pursuing post-secondary education with financial assistance from their Festival awards. Several are professional musicians.
Incorporated in 1999 as a non-profit society with charitable status, the Sunshine Coast Festival of the Performing Arts depends on community financial contributions and SCFPA Society memberships to support the awards program, pay adjudicators and rent venues. Community volunteers from across the Coast play an important role in helping the volunteer Board organize all of the Festival events. The community is encouraged to attend all Festival performances in this annual celebration of Coast musical talent.
