President’s Message

Plans are already underway for the 43rd Annual Sunshine Coast Festival of the Performing Arts and we are pleased to announce that the festival will begin Monday, April 11, 2016 with the piano classes at the Arts Centre and will run for three jam-packed weeks, culminating with the Highlights Concert and Awards Ceremony at Raven’s Cry Theatre Sunday, May 1, 2016.

In between, there will be vocals, choirs, bands, strings, folk instrumental, electronic and acoustic music and dance, both classical and contemporary. And returning this year after and absence of many years is dramatic arts, classes which will be open to youth and adults alike. The syllabus for this class is still being prepared but, as they say, “watch this site”. The complete syllabus will be online December 1, 2015 and deadline for entries is January 31, 2016.

This year, we say good-bye to two long time members of the board: Sue Milne and Chelsea Sleep. Sue has been the backbone of the festival for many years and her knowledge and experience will be sorely missed, although she says we can call on her for her expertise or the wealth of information she has on her computer. Chelsea has spearheaded the folk instrumental discipline for several years and we have watched the players become ever more accomplished over the years. To both of you, thank you for the hundreds and hundreds of hours you have contributed to make the festival such a success.

And finally, a huge thank you to our sponsors especially the Sunshine Coast Credit Union which has donated $1,000 a year to provide scholarships to our outstanding performers every year since 2004; Coast Recital Society for their unwavering support, moral and financial, and the District of Sechelt, as well as our many other donors, without whom we could not operate. Also, thank you to the Sunshine Coast Arts Council which is so generous with the Arts Centre and to the other users of the Centre which accommodates the festival and its performers. Thank you all. — Sue Carson
